Backend servers are used to store content and perform complex operations for it. A backend can be thought as a black box with stuff going in, to which operations are performed and as a result stuff comes out. Backend code is what determines what exactly is allowed to go in and what operations are performed on it. Average user never accesses backends directly, since backends only deal with machine language. Instead, users use a frontend which communicates with the backend. I have developed several Python backends for Telegram bots.

Logos was my first software project. After learning Python for the very first time I figured that I had to do something to not forget how to use it. I started the development of a bot. During all these years I have added several features to the bot, such as wayfinding services,nysse-locator services, a minesweeper game, information about the school's menus, weather forecasts and so on and so forth.

My master's thesis involved a deep dive into dark patterns both theoretically and empirically. For the empirical part I created two websites and a backend with Lambda functions.

Master's thesis

A web app for calculating various things for a game called Eve: Echoes. The app's backend refreshes every 24 hours to retrieve new pricing data from a CSV API. It also generates a new access token and sends it to FTL Industries' (a game guild) Discord server. This solution prevents unauthorized access while it still remains possible to share the service with corporation (guild) members who do not have a Discord account.

CourseRobot is Python-made Telegram bot that brings the functionality of
Course-O-Meter directly to Telegram. It is also my first project using Docker.
The app is an inline bot, so it can be accessed from any chat.


Back in 2017 I decided that I need a website of my own. It took a year to decide what sort of
site to make and what technologies to use, but finally I decided to try
Next.js (at the time version was 6.1.1) which seemed an ultra-modern and interesting choice at the
time. The result is the very fast hybrid application you see before you. Behold! In retrospect the
choice of framework might not have been that successful: due to breaking changes in Next.js every few months
the site needs to be rewritten so often that it is a significant contributor to my JavaScript fatigue.
But hey, at least I learned a new framework.
